Check basic reachability
CompletedWhat you are learning
Send two ICMP echo requests to the configured lab target.
- Explain why reachability is checked before deeper service discovery.
- Confirm whether an authorized target responds without treating reachability alone as proof of a specific service.
- Recognize that network controls can affect whether a target appears reachable.
Reachability checks are a basic part of asset validation and troubleshooting. Security teams use them to confirm expected exposure, investigate connectivity issues, and identify differences between documented and observed network behavior. A lack of response does not automatically mean a system is absent, because firewalls, routing, or filtering may affect what can be observed.
Follow the exercise instructions provided by the trainer for this lesson.
Enter one finding per line. Identity and condition are locked by the facilitator.
A reply is evidence that the target is reachable by ICMP. No reply is inconclusive because firewalls and cloud controls may filter ICMP.
Repeated ICMP probes can appear in network telemetry. Defenders should distinguish expected monitoring from unusual reconnaissance patterns.
